Mumbai: The Securities and Exchange Board of India chief Madhabi Puri Buch on Monday reiterated investors should take a long-term view of the equity markets rather than betting in the derivatives segment.

“I must admit, I am always a little confused and surprised as to why people continue to do that (bet in futures and options) knowing that the odds are not in their favour at all,” the Sebi chairperson said during a BSE event.

“There is a 90 % chance that the investor will lose money in the F&O segment, but we also know, and the data shows us, that if you take a long-term view of the market, and if you invest with a long-term perspective, you will rarely go wrong,” Buch said.

She cited a research done by Sebi which showed that only 11% of the 45.24 lakh individual traders in the derivatives segment made a profit.

The regulator’s study revealed that nine out of 10 individual trades in the derivatives segment incurred net losses.

“There is a very good chance that you would be creating wealth over a sustained period of time which will exceed the inflation rate in the economy and you would get a real rate of return on your investment over a long term,” Buch said. She was speaking during the launch of the Investor Risk Reduction Access (IRRA) platform at BSE.
